This Saturday, Bamboo Curtain Studio is exhibiting 16 new visual arts emerging stars of Taiwan. Four curators from all over the island select these new talents.
September is as usual the start of the visual arts fall season worldwide. The heat is on Asia currently, with five Biennale opening in synchronized order to each other in East Asia. This is a much-choreographed marketing strategy to get as much global attention to this part of Asia as possible. But who are these international biennale curators, and how do they contextualize their shows to their local situation? There is much debate on the overall problem of international biennales with too many familiar names and artistic styles. Ennui maybe setting in to these biennale visitors moving from one city to the next.
There are many forms of new artistic expressions that are happening in all corners of the world, and Taiwan is no exception. The island’s background in its authentic multi-cultural / multi-colonial past makes the culture expressions here quite open and unique, with subtle inner depth within the new internet-wise generation of arts graduates.
With the help of four regional curators, Bamboo Curtain Studio wishes to be the showcase for these 16 rising stars from all over Taiwan. Many of them are already making headways into regional shows, like the Gwangju Biennale opening this Thursday in Korea, and others are winners of Taipei Fine arts Awards; many had international exchange and residencies experiences.
Yet, we strongly belief in the authentic local content of their works. Though they use current international genre in style or medium. Their works are thus local and yet universal in understanding. These ‘Made In Taiwan’ Culture Products are ready as new export onto global culture stage. They surely will make their presence in the current trend of promoting awareness of culture diversity globally.
